Either way, I dunno how much I can say 'bout the situation, since I really only just got here, but.. I think anyone'd have a hard time here gettin' everyone to agree to the same standards and have them actually follow 'em. From what I saw back there, it seems like there's a whole lot of different people here. [ Really different. Seriously, it's an understatement. ] But what I'd be more worried about is whether whoever would get put in charge could actually be trusted or not. Not like there's a good way to tell here, right?

I believe that you're right about that, however. I have been talking further to Saitou on the matter, and we have come to the conclusion that if anything, we should set up a defence force not dissimilar to what we were already heading at home. Given the amount of people who are from different places and times, reaching a consensus would be nearly impossible.

And you're right, there's no way to fairly elect someone to take over such a task, either. There are too many concerns here to make it particularly viable.

[ SO MUCH FOR THE COLLECTIVE GOOD IDEA OF DITCHING CAMPUS FOR THIS PLACE SOONER VERSUS LATER AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE.

Hijikata's just walking, though, not making much of a scene as to what he might be doing. At least, the vice-commander doesn't look as normally determined and not taking any shit from anyone because he's doing what he wants right now.

That might be because he had to tell Kondou straight that he had to leave and there was really nothing either one of them was going to be able to do to chance that. There just wasn't... a choice, unless it was to let that person still out there die (because he's not counting on the luck of the other considering what he's heard from him).

...But, at the very least, he intends to make this as quick as possible. Maybe right now he thinks he can handle it because he's a rasetsu, but Rory's just a human and that puts just about as much of an urgent time limit on things as if he was still one himself. ]

[ It's not hard to notice Hijikata going off. Not when they all decided to go to the cave (if you could call it that to begin with, they already firmly established that suns don't exactly belong in a cave, after all) early since it just felt like things were going to get worse, and it's not really like the other man would have any reason to go exploring by himself by now when he was with Saitou even last week when they hadn't even moved here yet.

It's enough to make Shinpachi at least curious enough though to speak up when he sees it. ]

Hey, Hijikata-san! [ At first he just keeps standing in the same spot, but then he decides that's not really conductive to having a conversation (especially if it ends up being something sensitive one way or another) so he jogs a few steps up towards the man. ] You going somewhere?

[ If Hijikata's bothered by the question or by the fact he's being talked to, it doesn't seem to show (because he doesn't tense or fumble in his body language but he certainly doesn't stop either to walk to be spoken to). He doesn't have much to show in terms of the other catching up, either, answering him as if he's asking about the weather once he's close enough to hear him without his voice needing to be raised. ]

[ Honestly, the last week took a huge hit to his usual optimism and pride. Heisuke and Chizuru were literally tortured to death in front of them, in front of him, and he couldn't change a single thing about it. Even though they hardly did anything wrong and certainly didn't deserve it. Even though he already saw Heisuke die once before and never wanted to see that again if he could help it, but.. no good in the end, huh?

But then he sees the message, and in the face of Oz's kind of spirit he almost feels a little ashamed of himself to just be moping around. He's supposed to be the grownass man around here, come on, Shinpachi..! ]

[ if souji is a master of anything, it will have to be the art of sidestepping around the issue. he doesn't feel like talking about what happened yesterday so if he puts the focus on their attempts to grab everything he and saitou gathered throughout the week, maybe he'll eventually forget about it.

[ If Shinpachi would have to sum up all the feelings he has after last week and especially yesterday, he would probably just call it "tired". Trying to help out people as much as he could all week wasn't that bad although constantly being on guard made him more exhausted than usually, but it really was the last day that did it. Just when he relaxed for a moment halfway through the week, of course it would all just blow up like that again at the end.

And the message he spots from Souji of all people only reminds him more of everything that happened. Even now his body feels heavy at the very thought, even though he tried to distract himself just as much as Souji did by dragging the supplies around. ]

[ Not that it had been very easy with all these vines around. This place sure knew how to make everything more difficult when things are already shitty to begin with.

Shinpachi stares at the device for a moment or two, wondering what else to type. Part of him almost wants to ask if he's okay, but it'd be a dumb question. Of course Souji's not okay, just as much as he's not okay either.

There's other stuff he wants to say about the situation from yesterday that he didn't get to say back there though, but he delays it for a moment. Until he can figure out how to say it. ]

the plan had been to distract themselves, not dwell on something like that. but you can pretty much see just how well it's working on souji. ]

[because even with the cultists being creeps outside and all of that terrible stuff going on, a person still has to eat when they're hungry and all...!

which is to say, Kaoru has taken it upon himself to meander into the communal kitchen at a slightly later hour than usual in the hopes of missing sad, sad people who are grabbing cans of creamed corn out from the cupboards and lamenting their lives. since he had been so generous with his supplies earlier in the week, he's having to really hold on to what he has left now... god, if he knew how long they would take to repair the tracks, he would have waited until mid-week to start offering, even if that wouldn't have earned him as many brownie points.

but yes, here he is, bumping the door open with his shoulder. in his arms he has a small bag filled with cured ham (real meat!! from the deli!), uncooked rice and a small pot to heat it in, a few tins of seasoning and some of the pickled vegetables that didn't taste godawful. and... gODDAMN the kitchen isn't empty, of course, of course. he manages to suppress the brief irritation he feels (partially because it is 100% hilarious to see a grownass man looking at a can of creamed corn like it's stepped on his prized petunias) and musters up a polite smile.]

Ah— Nagakura-san, good evening. Are you here for dinner...? [NOW HE'S GONNA HAVE TO OFFER TO SHARE HIS FOOD, UGH.]

[ Sure, he caught that snake with Saitou to eat that, and sure, they did eat from the stuff Saitou had gathered and he and Souji had brought back from that horribly weird place (when he thinks about it, he sure owes a lot of his small reliefs from creamed corn to that guy, huh..) but it's not like it lasts forever. And Saitou's one of the strictest people possible when it comes to rationing. And it's not like he isn't used to having little to eat since that was practically the order of the day at Shiekan, but...

.. come on, he's a grownass man! They can't seriously expect him to live on that kind of stuff, what if his muscles shrink?! Geez, seriously people, let's get our priorities straight here.

So Shinpachi can't help but still feel hungry even after dinner, but of course the only stuff left in the kitchen is.. well, creamed corn. So he's taken to staring at one of the cans as he sits, contemplating whether he's really desperately enough to sell away his soul to the creamed corn devil.

But just as he's doing that is when he hears the door open and he instinctively looks up at the sound-- only to notice Kaoru of all people entering. The first time since he got the news from Souji that Kaoru isn't entirely what he seems.

(He still can't see how that's supposed to be a guy, he thinks to himself as he watches Kaoru walk in and greet him.)

And while usually he might have started that he sure is and you sure won't mind sharing some of that delicious actual food with him right, this is different. Kaoru is trouble, Souji said, and while the guy can be way too trigger happy, Shinpachi does trust the guy. Even if he hasn't seem him around in a little while.

So even though he does reply, the look in his eyes is already giving away the fact he knows more than last time before he even says it - it's not like he would be very good at hiding it even if he tried, anyway. ]

Do you really care? [ Because while Shinpachi might seem like an idiot and in some ways actually be an idiot, it's not like he's dumb. He can catch onto Kaoru's politeness being feigned after Souji said Kaoru is no good. ]

[ Yeah, hopefully. Except he just stares at his device for a moment when it signals he has a new message, wondering whether he even wants to look at it or not. He feels like he has the worst hangover of his life right about now, and the fact that he feels guilty as hell doesn't help him much either. He rolls over on his bed to look at the device (realising it goes pretty easily now he doesn't have his swords with him the way he usually does) just in case it's someone who really needs help with an emergency--
